American Express History & Growth in Bangladesh:

In 2008, a team from American Express conducted a market survey in Bangladesh to explore business opportunities. They approached several local banks to introduce Amex card services. However, due to higher processing fees, no bank initially accepted the offer.

During this time, Mr. Aziz Al Kaiser, then Chairman of The City Bank, saw an opportunity. Unlike other banks, City Bank proactively reached out to American Express and successfully negotiated a partnership agreement. As a result, on November 9, 2009, City Bank PLC officially launched American Express credit card services in Bangladesh. At that time, the bank was named The City Bank Limited.

The Rise of Amex Credit Cards in Bangladesh:

Since its introduction, American Express has become one of the most preferred credit card brands in Bangladesh. The strategic partnership with City Bank has positioned Amex as a market leader, revolutionizing the country’s digital payment ecosystem.

Initially, City Bank introduced three Amex credit card, Green Blue, Gold and Later, they expanded their offerings with Platinum credit card. Currently, City Bank issues American Express branded debit cards (Citymax),Amex Prepaid Card, and Virtual Debit and Prepaid Card.

City Bank also introduced co-branded credit cards with special benefits in collaboration witht country's first and most popular retail chain shop Agora,, and the Dhaka University (DU).

For women, the bank has launched a special American Express Credit Card with exclusive benefits, known as the City Alo American Express Card.

Bangladesh has a predominantly religious Muslim population, and Islamic teachings prohibit interest-based transactions. Considering this, City Bank, under its Islamic banking window, City Islamic, has introduced Blue and Gold American Express Credit Card. Additionally, it has launched an American Express Debit Card specifically for Islamic banking account holders.

This expansion has helped City Bank strengthen its position, capturing 35% of Bangladesh’s credit card market.

As the first financial institution in the country, City Bank launched the American Express Lounge at the airport, providing exclusive privileges to cardmembers. Additionally, it pioneered the issuance of Card Cheques against credit card limits, offering unparalleled financial flexibility.

One of the most significant advancements has been City Bank’s rapid expansion of EMI (Equated Monthly Installment) facilities. Through strategic partnerships with leading companies, 0% interest for terms ranging from 3 to 36 months.

To further enhance customer convenience, City Bank introduced FlexiLoan, allowing cardholders to avail financial assistance against their credit limit. Customers can simply call the bank’s customer service center to check their eligibility and apply for funds as needed.

Furthermore, City Bank American Express continues to lead the market with exclusive services such as international roaming subscription options, Priority Pass issuance, and a host of other premium privileges. These innovations have solidified City Bank American Express as a market leader in Bangladesh’s credit card sector.

City Bank currently operates an extensive nationwide network, ensuring seamless banking services across Bangladesh. The bank's infrastructure includes 134 branches, 52 sub-branches, 485 agent banking points, 458 ATMs, 7 Priority Centers, 7 American Express Service Centers, and 3 Airport Lounges.
